Product Description

Precision and Protection
This 1/8" Magpanel merges precise engineering with premium protection. Designed for applications where space is at a premium, this panel delivers fireproof confidence and corrosion resistance in a slender profile. Its ecological construction affirms your commitment to sustainability without compromising on quality or safety.

FAQs

Does Magpanel experience corrosion when in contact with metals, such as screws or staples, similar to regular MGO boards? No, it does not. Magpanel boasts two significant advantages over regular MGO boards:
    1. Magpanel is crafted from magnesium sulfate, not magnesium chloride. This means it does not suffer from corrosion upon contact with metals, unlike regular MGO boards made from chloride that often cause corrosion and the problematic "weeping effect."
     2. Magpanel is entirely biodegradable and eco-friendly, while regular magnesium oxide panels contain chloride, a harmful environmental pollutant.

Is Magpanel suitable for fire-rated construction applications? Absolutely. Its fire-resistant properties make it an ideal choice for use in fire-rated walls and ceiling assemblies, ensuring enhanced safety standards.

What makes Magpanel a good fit for green building practices? Magpanel aligns perfectly with green building standards, contributing to healthier indoor air quality and ethical material sourcing. Its use aids in acquiring green building certifications, promoting sustainability in construction.

We do not provide installation services but have no fear as there are many high-quality contractors in your state and the majority will be eager to provide a free estimate over the phone or in the comfort of your own home.  We recommend that you check out our helpful article titled 7 Tips For Choosing A Floor Installer.

We highly recommend reading our Shipping Policy for a comprehensive explanation of our shipping processes.

We ship most freight orders (over 125 lbs) out within 4 business days of purchase, the average being 2 business days. For faster shipment of freight orders, we offer an Expedited Shipping option at checkout however please note that this simply means that we will ship the order out the next business day - it does not shorten the transit time once shipped. For small parcel orders we offer express UPS shipping options at checkout as well; please note that for express shipping services the order must be placed by 2pm EST in order to ship out that same day, otherwise we will process the shipment the next business day.  We do not ship out orders, nor do the shipping companies deliver them, on weekends.

For residential lift-gate freight order deliveries, once the flooring order arrives at the local freight terminal, they will call you to schedule your delivery appointment, which is usually a 2-6 hour window on the day of your choosing (weekdays only) when possible. All deliveries are curbside as the freight companies do not offer inside delivery.

MagPanel® is a strong, high quality, fireproof, mineral-based building material used to replace regular MgO boards, plywood, fiber cement panels, OSB and gypsum wallboards. It is an extremely versatile product for use with interior and exterior construction. It is made from bonding certain elements (including magnesium and oxygen) which results in an extremely strong cement-like material.

Expansive deposits of magnesium oxide can be found in China, Europe, and Canada. The great White Mountains in China have so much natural MgO, it is estimated there is enough to last another 800 years at today's rate of consumption. Thus, MagPanel® is an incredible building material with seemingly unlimited uses. It can be used in place of drywall, and some of the many applications include sub-flooring and tile backer, ceilings, walls, exteriors, soffits, sheathing, coding substrates, shaft-liner, bathtub enclosures, and exterior siding. When used for exterior projects it must be coated or protected from the elements.

MgO board is harder and stronger than drywall, and it is resistant to fire, insects, mold, mildew, and rot. It is sound and impact resistant, and has good insulating characteristics. It's noncombustible and non-toxic, has a receptive bonding surface, and contains no dangerous toxins like some other building materials. One exciting characteristic about Magnesium board is that it's lightweight while still being very, very strong. Therefore, a smaller amount of MgO board can do the same job (or better) as a greater amount of another material, such as sheetrock. And don't forget, because MgO board is so moisture-resistant, it lasts a very long time. The Great Wall of China is a perfect example of that!

Magpanel® can be sawed, drilled, router-shaped, scored and snapped, nailed, and painted. It's many uses in the construction field include fireproof materials for ceilings and walls in every type of construction including apartment complexes, theaters, airports, hospitals, and much more.

This amazingly versatile product also happens to be very green (environmentally friendly – not the color green). It has no ammonia, formaldehyde, benzene, silica, or asbestos, and it is completely safe for humans. It's a natural product that can be completely recycled, so it leaves a very small carbon footprint, and has no negative impact on landfills.

MagPanel® is available in a variety of sizes and thicknesses, it comes in a choice of basic colors and textures, and there are different grades and strengths to choose from, depending on the application. Because it is so hard, there is no need to place joints on a stud. And because it is so stiff, thin boards can be used in place of thicker boards of another material.

Ceilings: For ceilings where the board will be fastened by screw to light gauge steel or wood use 12mm or thicker. Use a thicker board if planning to countersink the screw head. For drop down ceilings using MgO as panels, use 2mm or 6mm.

Walls: For most walls a board that is 12mm is common. For walls requiring greater fire and impact resistance use a board that is 15mm to 20mm thick.

For walls that have continuous backing, cement, or rigid insulation, a thinner board can be used. This is important when weight is a concern. For example, trailer homes have used 6mm as fully supported wall covering boards.

For subflooring and roofing applications, use 20mm.

We invite you to purchase MagPanel® directly through our easy-to-use website! We ship MagPanel to residential and commercial locations worldwide. Have more questions? Live chat with a representative or call (866) 710-7070.  We also recommend ordering samples first to ensure the product meets your standard.

It is made by combining the carbon out of magnesium carbonite: commonly called “MgO” due to its chemical composition of magnesium (chemical symbol Mg) and oxygen (chemical symbol O). When oxygen is combined with magnesium under heat and pressure, it can produce a stone-like material - MgO. It is ground up into a powder, which is then combined with water to make a cement-like (adhesive) material. MagPanel® also contains other components but MgO is the primary component.

Similar compounds have been used for construction purposes for thousands of years in such world-famous sites such as the Great Wall of China, Rome's Pantheon, and extensively throughout one of the world's tallest buildings, such as Taipei 101.

Pure magnesium, in its raw form, burns. MgO, however, is completely nonflammable and is used for fireproofing.

Magnesium sulfate (MgSO4) MgO boards (MagPanel) and magnesium chloride (MgCl2) MgO boards differ primarily in the type of magnesium salt used in their manufacture. Magnesium sulfate boards use magnesium sulfate as the bonding agent, which is known for being less corrosive and more stable, thereby reducing the risk of moisture absorption and subsequent damage. Magnesium chloride boards, on the other hand, utilize magnesium chloride, which is more cost-effective but can be more susceptible to moisture, leading to a phenomenon known as "weeping" or "halo effect," where the chloride ions attract moisture, potentially causing corrosion of metal components in contact with the board.

MagPanel® offers many cost benefits. Due to its strength and durability, MagPanel® increases the lifespan of structures such as homes and buildings. The cost per sheet of MagPanel® MgO Panels for the same thickness is higher than regular gypsum, but it's the same or less than specialty panels and generally less than cement products.

With MagPanel® you pay a small premium for a huge increase in versatility and applications of MagPanel®. In addition, MagPanel® MgO Panels are strong enough to support light shelving, pictures, etc.

If your building has a freight dock, the freight company will deliver your pallet of flooring to that dock, as long as it it large enough/suitable for a large tractor trailer to back up into. If you are unusure of this, you will want to contact your building management before scheduling your order delivery appointment. If the dock is not suitable for a tractor trailer, the next option is for the freight company to lower the pallets onto the curbside near the most accessible entrance to your building. If no such curbside is available, you may need to drive to the local freight company terminal to pick your order up (or request your contractor/installer to pick up the order for you).

We highly recommend you review our Shipping Policy, which has a lot of great information and a short video about the shipping process.  When your order ships out we’ll send you a notification email with all of your shipping information.  Once the shipment arrives at the local freight terminal near your delivery location, the terminal staff will call you to schedule a delivery appointment* (weekdays, usually a 2-6 hour window).  Make sure you don’t miss the delivery appointment or the freight company may charge a hefty re-delivery fee. *if you have selected commercial/freight dock delivery, freight may be delivered without needing an appointment

Once the order arrives, ensure you mark any damages you see on the driver’s bill of lading (they’ll then usually give you a copy).  You don’t have to open and inspect every item, just look at the outside of the pallet – that is where the shipping damage will be. Ensure you write the number of damaged items and detailed notes, then take photos of the damaged items and email all of this information to your Ambient representative to ensure we can ship out free replacements.

Important note: If your delivery location is located on a road that cannot be accessed by a semi-trailer truck, you may be required to pick the freight up at the local terminal or meet the driver at an intermediary location.

We accept the following payments:

1. All major credit and debit cards.

2. Personal and bank checks (please note there may be a 14-day shipping delay).

3. ACH payments.

4. Paypal. In fact, PayPal Credit offers financing.

MagPanel® MgO Panels are made from natural minerals, 91% of the composition of the board is comprised Magnesium oxide and Magnesium Sulphate otherwise known as Epsom salts. The additional 9% is comprised of wood fiber (cellulose) perlite or vermiculite and a glass fiber mesh backing. There are no volatile organic compounds or toxic ingredients. The chloride content of our MgO boards is regulated during our manufacturing process and our boards average less than 1%.

Caution: while the materials used are not harmful, it is strongly recommended everyone wear proper silica/concrete dust respirators when using MagPanel® due to the dust created while cutting and sanding.

They are used in a variety of applications including interior and exterior wall sheathing, ceiling applications, fireproofing, and as a substrate for flooring and tiling.

MagPanel® MgO Panels are sold in standard 4 × 8 ft sheets and in multiple thickness from 1/8" up to 3/4" (3mm to 20mm.) We maintain stock in some thicknesses and all other thicknesses are available with 90-120 day lead times (minimum order quantities may apply). You can find more detailed information on our Magpanel MGO Boards products page.

Finish MagPanel® with most products such as paint, stucco, synthetic stucco, wallpaper, plaster, stone, tile, brick and much more. The strong adhesion properties of MagPanel® also make it a perfect product for Structural Insulated Panels (SIPS), Exterior Insulated Finish Systems (EIFS) and interior wall systems using fabrics.

To finish MagPanel® MgO Panels after installation, begin with a primer. This is required because MagPanel® panels are alkaline in nature. We recommend using a primer that is suitable for concrete or masonry. There are a few popular brands of paint which react molecularly with the cement in MagPanel® forming a UV highly resistant coating that will last for years. Acrylic stucco topcoats or polymer modified cement base coats can also be used and individually applied to the board. Test the topcoats and paints prior to completing the entire project. To properly test the bonding capability of the topcoat, brush on or spray a small area of the MagPanel® with paint, let the board dry and cure. Then make an X with a sharp razor knife, apply masking tape over the cut and press firmly and rip it off like a band-aid. If the paint stays on the board, this indicates the paint and board have a successful bond.

There are multiple finishing techniques recommended for the joints of MgO. Concrete patching compounds and or sandable elastomeric joint compounds are the most common. One such method is outlined here:

STEP#1: IMPORTANT: Fill the mandatory 16th-1/8th inch gap between sheet with: Manus-Bond 75 AM: (flush to ext of bd) (in cold climate be sure to heat to penetrate)

STEP#2: Apply the min. 6"wide FiberGlass tape that is embedded with the RapidSet "Wunderfixx" product (sand this before completely dry while in a "leather-like" state otherwise to difficult to sand if 100% dry--fully embed the FG tape --feather out to ~12-18" wide each side of the seam

STEP#3: After the Wunderfixx is relatively smooth then apply a final finishing coat of:  http://www.murcowall.com M-100, or for a pre-mixed more durable surface: http://www.westpacmaterials.com "Red Dot" --feather out to ~18-24" wide for best results

It is paramount to maintain a stable temperature and humidity condition before, during, and after MgO installation on an interior wall or ceiling system.

The density of MagPanel® is around 1 gram per cubic centimeter or just over 2.2 pounds per square foot for 12mm (1/2 inch) board. They are typically heavier than gypsum and lighter than ordinary cement boards.

Yes, Magnesium Oxide boards are highly fire-resistant, offering excellent protection against fire, which makes them suitable for use in fire-prone areas. MagPanel is A1 Fire Rated and tested to over 750° C (1,382° F) with no discoloration over 30 minutes.

None of our products are brought inside the delivery location by the driver.  All small parcel shipments are at the discretion and policy of the shipping company.

Flooring freight shipments are curbside delivery with lift-gate unless you specifically request freight dock delivery.  Curbside delivery means they lower the pallet on the street at the end of the driveway. The drivers are not required to enter the property boundaries, although if not hazardous sometimes they’ll back up the driveway (if it’s flat and short) and drop the pallet on the driveway.

All materials that exceed 4 ft in width or 6 ft in length (Iike bamboo plywood, MagPanel, decking, etc) must bee unloaded by hand, or forklift, at the curbside. Large pallets arrive situated on the truck lengthwise and require a forklift with 8 ft forks or extensions to offload. For large orders we recommend a forklift on-site capable of lifting 4,000 lbs unless alternative arrangements are made. It is the responsibility of the customer to ensure the proper equipment is on-site at the delivery location to unload large-dimension shipments.

It is imperative that the customer, or an authorized representative, be present on-site to accept the delivery, conduct an inspection for any external damages, and document any noted damages on the delivery driver’s bill of lading. Failure to do so will render us unable to provide complimentary replacements. We strongly advise against the engagement of labor for the sole purpose of awaiting the delivery, as freight companies occasionally fail to meet scheduled appointments, and compensation for such delays is not offered.

Our website may offer the option of "Garage Delivery" at an additional charge during checkout. This service is limited to the placement of the materials pallet into a carport or garage, subject to specific terms and conditions apply.

MagPanel® is moisture-resistant, but it is not waterproof. During periods of extended exposure, moisture can affect it and cause hydrothermal expansion. When used outdoors, it should always be covered or coated to protect it from the elements.

All structural MgO boards have some hydrothermal movement. You can leave expansion gaps to accommodate for expansion and/or sandable elastomeric joint compounds to accommodate shrinkage. MagPanel® is highly resistant to extreme outdoor environmental exposure such as rain and strong winds - as long as it is properly coated.

To fasten MagPanel® panels, use corrosion-resistant fasteners. Drywall screws that have a phosphoric coating also work well with MagPanel® panels. For the easiest installation, choose screws with self boring heads. Alternatively, use gun nails when applying to wood framing with the appropriate nails and /or light gauge steel framing with screws.

To finish MagPanel® joints, use sandable elastomeric joint compounds or lightweight concrete patching compounds in conjunction with wide fiberglass tape of 6" or more. Check with the manufacturer of the product to ensure it is compatible with MagPanel®. Use finely ground hydraulic cement fillers such as RapidSet One Pass to establish industrial strength joints. Additionally, urethanes bond well to MagPanel® panels. Most lightweight pre-mixed mud does not like moisture and MgO panels can dry moisture through the board.

MagPanel® MgO Panels bond well to itself, metal, expanded polystyrene, wood, and laminates using ChemLink M1 or another moisture-cured urethane adhesive.

While it can be a bummer if your shipment arrives damaged – it is not the end of the world! We can easily send you free replacements for anything that was damaged in transit - all we ask is that you do not refuse the shipment and mark any damages on the receipt provided by the driver. After that, please take a few photos of product while it is still on the pallet and email them to [email protected] so we can make a record on your account. Then, please examine the items further once you've brought them inside to determine the extent of the damage, and take photos of affected areas if you require replacements. Once we receive the details and photos we will send out the replacements right away. Most of the time, installers will be able to work around the damage instead of waiting to get replacements. For more information please see our Shipping Policy page.

Occasionally you will have an item with a visible defect either in the stain, finish, or milling. Like most building materials suppliers our effective defect rate is under the industry-standard 3%. However, if you are finding that more than 3% of the product you have ordered has defects, please let us know as soon as possible so we can resolve the matter quickly.

MagPanel® MgO Panels are ideal for use as a sub floor. Additionally, boards are available in the correct thickness and strength for use as structural sheathing. To determine the proper board grade depends on the design of the floor, joist span, spacing and size, dead load and live loading factors.

For optimal results cutting MagPanel®  use a thin carbide circular saw or worm drive saw. Rout the edges using carbide tooling. MagPanel® can be scored with a razor blade and snapped apart from the smooth side. This method does not provide as clean an edge and will require more finishing work. To prevent microcracking with cuts, glue all corners together.

Magnesium Oxide boards are more fire-resistant, moisture-resistant, and durable than traditional gypsum and plywood, offering a longer lifespan and better performance in harsh conditions.

We recommend that you review our handy Return Shipping Guide to see the detailed steps to return your order.

MagPanel® can be stored easily indoors. It is highly resistant to moisture, and humidity making it easy to store. MagPanel® should be stored inside in a cool dry place - as with any sheet building material. To protect the edges and corners, carry boards on their side. Stack boards flat on dunnage, loose wood, matting or other material and not directly on the ground. Do not allow MagPanel® to bow. Do not stack any other materials on top of MagPanel®. Before installing MagPanel® acclimate the panels for 48 hours in the room where they will be installed.

Magnesium Oxide boards may be more expensive upfront than some traditional materials like gypsum, but their durability and resistance properties can lead to cost savings over time.

Yes, we may be able to accommodate this, but please note that we may still apply a small shipping and handling fee to your order.  Please reach out to your sales representative for details.

The links to the policies below can also be found in the footer of our website, and we encourage all customers to review these policies before purchasing.
